The goldfish is a descendant of the wild gibel carp – originally a small, unattractive dark gray or brown carp. In the period between Three Kingdoms and Eastern Jin, golden gibel carp was first discovered. Since the word fish, pronounced as “yu” in Chinese, signifies surplus, the hobby of rearing goldfish has long been associated by the Chinese with good luck and prosperity. It was one of the first fish to be domesticated, during the Song Dynasty in China. Over 300 varieties of goldfish exist today, each with its own unique coloration and physical characteristics. Goldfish can live to up 10 years old.

  • In Chinese culture, goldfish is a symbol of good fortune, peace and friendship.
